City of Golden: TREEpaQ

The City of Golden, Colorado, located to the West of Denver at the Eastern edge of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, has a population of over 17,000 and is responsible for approximately 6,700 valuable trees. Since 1999 the CartęGraph Asset and Work Management Suite of software has been used to manage much of Golden’s urban infrastructure. In 2009 they were ready to add Tree Management to the system, and set out to look into various options.

The city required a robust tree management system that would take advantage of the inherent strengths of the CartęGraph Suite, but that would also be powerful enough to have its own unique focus.  While the city has only one Arborist, Parks and Recreation Department staff would also be using the program for inspections: Golden needed a system that was easy to use, required little training and had an inspection component based on the Colorado State Inspection forms.

AGL TREEpaQ was created by AGL with the help of urban forestry experts and is fully integrated with the CartęGraph Suite to take advantage of CartęGraph’s work management and GIS functionality (Figure 1: Main Form).  TREEpaQ includes an extensive species library which can accommodate user additions of local species, as well as a disease and pest database to employ with inspections.   Added functionality includes a sketch pad and a customizable inspection environment.

Using TREEpaQ, the City was able to accommodate the Colorado State inspection process (Figure 2: Inspection Form) and to automate the two stage index calculation.  AGL built in extensive reference material to aid the inspectors in selecting the various components of inspection process.  The system also includes an automatic trigger to notify the inspector that a specific tree requires the second priority stage of the Colorado inspection process.

Following careful preparation by AGL, the system implementation took only half a day to integrate TREEpaQ into the City’s CartęGraph database, which was followed by one day of training.

The City is currently taking the data into the field using the CartęGraph Mobile with forms (Figure 3: Main Mobile Form) provided by AGL to allow easy access to the data.
